EMDR Therapy
Sometimes the past is present.
Overwhelming or painful experiences can linger in our minds and bodies long after they are over. Sometimes they leave us sad, numb, hopeless, scattered, or exhausted. At other times, they show up as feeling on edge, scanning for danger, or avoiding reminders of the past. For some people, they surface as nightmares or flashbacks. We might start to feel trapped by what happened, rather than free to live fully in the present. If you are experiencing the lingering effects of unresolved past experiences, we can help.
EMDR therapy is a structured, research-supported approach that helps people process painful or traumatic experiences that continue to affect them in the present. EMDR can support people who have experienced acute or chronic trauma, as well as those who find themselves stuck in recurring emotional or relationship patterns that may stem from unresolved past experiences.
Many clients come to EMDR after realizing that traditional talk therapy has helped them understand their experiences, but has not fully shifted how those experiences live in the body or nervous system. EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — pairs brief, focused attention to a memory with bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, which helps the brain reprocess what overwhelmed it at the time. You don't need to recount your experiences in detail for it to work. The result is that the past feels more like the past, rather than something that continues to shape present-day emotions, beliefs, and reactions.
Our EMDR work is collaborative and paced. We begin with careful assessment, preparation, and resourcing, and move into memory processing only when clinically appropriate. The goal is not to rush into painful material, but to help you approach what feels stuck with support, steadiness, and a stronger connection to present-day safety.
At Oaklight, EMDR is offered by Sara Dickson. She is EMDR-trained through The Center for Excellence in EMDR Therapy and continues to deepen her practice through ongoing consultation and advanced study. Sessions are available in person in Bethesda or online for clients throughout Maryland and DC.
